Obtaining a Student Visa
Once you have applied and been offered a place, this process can be started by approaching the Australian Embassy or Consulate nearest you. They will help you with the specific requirements for your country. Your student visa application will be assessed according to the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) assessment level and evidentiary requirements of your passport country. You may be required to provide proof of your English language skills and evidence that you have enough money to pay for living expenses, education costs and travel for the duration of your study. Your student visa will have certain conditions attached to it which you must abide by during your stay in Australia. Failure to comply with these conditions may result you in being asked to leave the country. Paying Fees
The Australian Government requires international students to pay their first semester’s fees into the Institute’s trust fund prior to coming to Australia. This includes tuition fees and medical insurance.
Students who bring dependents of school age with them to Australia will be required to pay school fees for them in addition to their own tuition fees. To find out more information on enrolling your children in a NSW Government School and the costs involved visit www.schools.nsw.edu.au/international
Medical Insurance
All International students with the exception of Norwegian and Swedish students are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their stay. We will organise medical insurance for you for one year initially with Medibank Private and then you renew your cover directly with Medibank for subsequent years.
The cost of cover for one year is approximately AUD$342.00 for single students and AUD$684.00 for families. You can find out more information about OSHC by visiting the Medibank Private website at www.medibank.com.au
Travelling to Sydney
Of course your travel agent can help you with this, but just in case they don’t know much about Sydney... there is only one international airport in Sydney. It’s a long flight to Sydney from just about everywhere, so prepare yourself – perhaps don’t sleep for the previous three nights, or buy several books of crossword puzzles. Don’t forget to drink lots of water and wear comfy (that’s "comfortable" in Australian) clothes. Sydney airport has very good taxi services. If your scheduled arrival time is very early or very late, using the taxi service is advised. If you need assistance with transport from the airport, we can organise for someone to pick you up at a cost of AUD$30.00. This service is not available in Orientation Week due to staff and student commitments. It is also advisable to bring some Australian dollars with you for immediate fares and refreshments on your arrival.
Accommodation
It is important you have at least short-term accommodation sorted before you get on the plane. Our Student Housing provides accommodation for up to 30 students in the suburb of Concord. Accommodation is in single bedroom/studies and twin-share bedrooms with individual study areas. Meals are served in the dining room, and there are indoor and outdoor common areas. The Housing Supervisors provide meals and take care of general household management. Residents are asked to assist with small tasks, such as serving meals. International and interstate students are given first priority in student housing.
If your family will be accompanying you to Sydney you may find it useful to contact real estate agents from before you arrive to find suitable accommodation. To rent property in Sydney, tenants are usually required to provide character references and statements of confirming your history of paying rent on time or bank statements showing your capacity to do so. The following website, www.realestate.com.au , will give you some idea of the different types of dwellings available for rent and their costs per week, as well as properties which are currently on the market if you are thinking of buying property to live in during your stay in Australia.
Living Expenses
Whilst the cost of living in Sydney is lower than some other major cities in the world, you should budget to spend between $300 – 350 per week to pay for necessities such as accommodation, transport, telephone calls, textbooks and personal expenses such as entertainment.
